40 Years Strong: Emirates’ Journey with Colombo Continues

Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, is marking 40 years of operations to Colombo, Sri Lanka this year, highlighting four decades of strong connectivity between the island nation and its global network.

Since launching its first flight in April 1986, the airline has carried more than 15 million passengers on over 97,000 flights to and from Sri Lanka. Over the past 20 years alone, Emirates has also transported more than 403,000 tonnes of cargo, playing a key role in supporting trade and economic activity between Sri Lanka and international markets.

Strong Daily Connectivity and Premium Travel Experience

At present, Emirates operates three daily flights connecting Colombo with more than 135 destinations worldwide. These services continue to strengthen both tourism and business travel, offering passengers seamless global connectivity.

Travellers flying to and from Colombo experience the airline’s “Fly Better” service on Boeing 777 aircraft as well as the newly introduced Airbus A350. These aircraft feature four cabin classes, including the popular Premium Economy option.

Key Travel Markets and Passenger Trends

In the past year, the majority of passengers arriving in Sri Lanka travelled from major European markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Outbound travel from Colombo has primarily focused on destinations such as Dubai, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Madagascar, reflecting strong demand across multiple regions.

Strengthened Airline Partnerships

To further improve connectivity, Emirates expanded its partnership with SriLankan Airlines in 2023, increasing cooperation across 30 interline routes. This agreement allows passengers to benefit from single-ticket journeys and smoother transfers to destinations across the Far East, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

Enhanced Cabin Experience and Services

Emirates continues to upgrade its onboard experience, recently introducing its Premium Economy cabin on the latest A350 aircraft and select refurbished Boeing 777 flights. These upgrades feature modern interiors and enhanced comfort across all cabin classes.

Passengers also benefit from generous baggage allowances, gourmet dining inspired by regional cuisine, and access to more than 6,500 entertainment channels, including Sinhala and Tamil content.
