Emergency evacuation zone declared as sulphur blaze erupts in Port Adelaide shed

An emergency evacuation zone has been put in place in Adelaide’s northwest as a shed fire continues to produce toxic smoke.

Port Adelaide residents near Moonta Rd have been told to leave immediately as the smoke spreads. One person has already been taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

An order to leave immediately was issued just after 11.40am, with authorities declaring a 1km evacuation zone. The shed is believed to have been packed with tonnes of sulphur.

Firefighters cannot use water on the blaze, with crews warning it would spark a violent chemical reaction and could cause an explosion.

People within the zone have been ordered out now, with emergency services describing the area as “extremely dangerous” and urging the public not to enter under any circumstances.

It is expected to burn for most of the day.
