Dubai air taxi plan moves closer after world-first vertiport approval

Dubai has taken a major step toward launching commercial air taxi services after its flagship vertiport, VDX, located near Dubai International Airport, secured official regulatory certification for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft operations.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in collaboration with Skyports Infrastructure, confirmed that VDX is the world’s first purpose-built vertiport designed specifically for commercial use to receive such certification. The approval marks a critical milestone in the development of Dubai’s Air Taxi network, a project being implemented by Skyports in partnership with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

VDX is set to function as the central hub of the network, with three additional vertiports currently under development across the city.

Passenger experience and capacity

The four-level facility covers approximately 3,100 square metres and is equipped with two dedicated landing and take-off pads. It also features rapid charging systems for electric aircraft and modern passenger amenities designed to support high-volume operations. Once services are operational, the vertiport is expected to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually.

Safety certification and regulatory approval

The certification was granted following a comprehensive review by the GCAA, which assessed the vertiport’s infrastructure, operational procedures, safety systems, emergency preparedness and overall compliance with aviation regulations.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, described the approval as a landmark achievement for both the UAE and the global aviation sector. He noted that the certification reflects the country’s commitment to innovation while upholding the highest safety standards, supported by a strong and mature regulatory framework.

The milestone also strengthens the regulatory foundation of Dubai’s air taxi initiative, an essential factor in building public trust ahead of the service launch.

Advancing Dubai’s Air Taxi network

Skyports Infrastructure stated that construction work on the broader Air Taxi network is progressing steadily, with VDX now serving as the primary operational hub for future services.

Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, said the certification brings Dubai closer to introducing a new mode of urban mobility. He added that the project aims to deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable transportation solution that will redefine city travel.

The development highlights Dubai’s ambition to lead the future of smart mobility and urban air transport, setting new benchmarks for innovation in the global aviation industry.
