Deep Depression Moves Toward India as Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Continue in Sri Lanka

The deep depression that had been prevailing over the Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is currently crossing the coastal areas of northern Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha in India, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Although the weather system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the wind flow towards the system is expected to continue bringing rainy conditions to the southwestern parts of the island.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres is possible in some areas.

A few showers may also occur in the North Central Province and Mannar District.

Strong winds of around 40–50 km/h may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North Central and North Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The Department of Meteorology has advised the public to take necessary precautions to minimise possible damage from temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
