Dayasiri seeks UN, IPU and CPA intervention over parliamentary privilege dispute
· Sri Lanka
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament Dayasiri Jayasekara has formally submitted communications to the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), seeking international review over recent parliamentary proceedings in Sri Lanka.
Jayasekara alleged that parliamentary authorities and government benches systematically hindered him from raising an important question of privilege, thereby violating democratic norms and restricting the freedom of speech guaranteed to elected legislators inside the chamber.
The parliamentarian indicated that constitutional guarantees regarding parliamentary democracy must be upheld, urging international legislative monitoring organizations to document the incident and engage relevant authorities to protect the rights of opposition members.
