Danoj Theekshana Overcomes Adversity to Secure Island’s Top Rank in Grade 5 Scholarship Examination

Danoj Theekshana Weerasekara of Ahatuwewa Model Primary School in Kurunegala has emerged as the island’s top performer in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination, achieving an exceptional 193 marks despite facing numerous challenges throughout his young life.

Danoj comes from a drought-prone village located close to areas inhabited by wild elephants. He was raised by his father and sister after losing his mother at an early age. Despite severe financial difficulties, a congenital heart condition requiring continuous treatment, and the responsibility of helping care for his bedridden grandparents, he remained determined to pursue his education.

Remarkably, Danoj achieved his outstanding result without attending private tuition classes. His preparation was based entirely on lessons conducted at school and his own dedicated self-study.

His daily life was far removed from that of a typical student. Wild elephants frequently roamed the route to his school, causing travel delays and creating additional difficulties. After completing his studies, Danoj would help his father with agricultural work, including planting and tending beans, while also assisting with night-time crop protection duties.

On the very day his examination results were released, Danoj was not celebrating at home. Instead, he was working in his family’s bean field, guarding the crops from wild peacocks.

His remarkable achievement was also supported by the dedication of his teachers. His class teacher, W. A. Asha Kumuduni, welcomed Danoj into her own home, where he was able to study alongside her children. School Principal D. M. Wasantha Dissanayake, together with the school community, also played an important role in nurturing and encouraging his education.

Danoj dreams of becoming an engineer in the future. At the same time, he hopes to fulfill his father’s greatest wish — to grow up to be a good human being.

His inspiring story has touched hearts across the country, with organizations and private well-wishers coming forward to offer their support.

Danoj’s success is more than an outstanding examination result. It is a powerful reminder that determination, resilience, family sacrifice and dedicated school-based mentorship can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.

The achievement of this young student from rural Kurunegala stands as an inspiration to children across Sri Lanka, proving that extraordinary dreams can be achieved even in the face of extraordinary challenges.
