Court imposes Rs. 200,000 fine on supermarket over uncertified electrical wire cords

The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court has imposed a Rs. 200,000 fine on the management of a supermarket in Anuradhapura for displaying electrical wire cords without the required Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification for sale.

The case was filed after an inspection carried out by officials of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) at a supermarket located on 11th Street in Anuradhapura.The CAA said electrical products such as wire cords must comply with prescribed standards to ensure consumer safety. The use of substandard electrical equipment can increase the risk of electric shocks, electrical leakage and fires.The Authority also urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing electrical wire cords and to check whether products carry the relevant SLS certification mark and other required information.Consumers have also been urged to report suspected violations or the sale of substandard or uncertified products to the CAA through its 1977 consumer hotline.The Authority said such reports would assist officials in taking action against traders who fail to comply with mandatory safety and quality standards.
