Commercial Bank Hands Over Renovated Wards at De Soysa Hospital for Women

Following the successful completion of a comprehensive renovation project launched in March this year to mark International Women’s Day, Commercial Bank has handed over Wards No. 03 and 04 at the De Soysa Hospital for Women to the hospital authorities.

Ward No. 03 accounts for a significant share of the hospital’s patient care services, handling approximately 2,500 to 3,000 deliveries and 4,000 to 5,000 admissions annually. The renovation was carried out with the aim of directly benefiting thousands of mothers and newborns while significantly improving patient care, safety and convenience.

The formal handover of the renovated ward was attended by five trustees of the Commercial Bank Social Responsibility Trust: Chairman Sharhan Muhseen, Deputy Chairman Raja Senanayake, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sanath Manatunge, Chief Operating Officer Hasrath Munasinghe, and Chief Financial Officer Prasanna Indrajith.

Established in 1879, the De Soysa Hospital for Women is Sri Lanka’s first maternity hospital and the second-oldest maternity hospital in Asia. The hospital has a significant place in Sri Lanka’s medical history, including performing the country’s first Caesarean section in 1905 and establishing an early organised operating theatre in 1907.

The project was implemented by the Commercial Bank Social Responsibility Trust, which has supported more than 100 government hospitals through healthcare initiatives by providing essential equipment and infrastructure. The Trust has also contributed to emergency medical services through its ‘Adopt an Ambulance’ initiative and implemented targeted community health programmes, including providing water-storage solutions to families affected by kidney disease.

The event also featured remarks by Sanath Manatunge, Managing Director and CEO of Commercial Bank, and Professor Athula Kaluarachchi, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
