Colombo Marathon 2026 Launched to Position Sri Lanka as a Global Sporting Destination

Sri Lanka has officially unveiled the Colombo Marathon 2026, a landmark international sporting event aimed at establishing Colombo as the country’s premier international city marathon. Organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with key partners, the event will take place on 13 September 2026 under the theme “Steps for Peace and Humanity.”

The official launch, held at City of Dreams Sri Lanka, brought together government officials, corporate partners and stakeholders to introduce the inaugural marathon, which is expected to elevate Sri Lanka’s presence on the global sports tourism map.

Designed to mirror the world’s leading city marathons, the Colombo Marathon 2026 will serve as an annual platform uniting elite athletes, local runners and communities, while promoting Colombo as a vibrant destination for international sporting events. The initiative combines athletic excellence with tourism promotion and community engagement, aiming to create a lasting legacy for the country.

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that the marathon represents a significant step in strengthening Sri Lanka’s international sporting profile. He noted that the event would inspire youth participation, create opportunities for athletes and showcase the country’s capability to host world-class events, while promoting unity and collective progress.

The marathon will feature five race categories catering to participants of all levels: the Full Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.097 km), 10 km Road Race, 5 km Fun Run and a Kids’ Mini Run. Organisers expect more than 4,000 local and international participants, contributing to the growth of sports tourism and encouraging healthier lifestyles.

Technical preparations are already underway to meet international standards, with the race route set to be certified by an international measurement specialist alongside local experts. Around 100 certified officials from Sri Lanka Athletics will oversee race operations, ensuring accurate timing and professional event management.

The event also highlighted growing collaboration within Sri Lanka’s sporting community, including the unveiling of a special Jaffna Kings jersey featuring the Colombo Marathon 2026 logo.

Colombo Marathon 2026 is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in partnership with the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. The event is presented by Union Assurance, powered by Elephant House, and supported by Nations Trust Bank and City of Dreams Sri Lanka, along with several key partners.

With its strong public-private partnership and international outlook, the Colombo Marathon 2026 is set to become a flagship sporting event, positioning Colombo as a dynamic hub for global athletics and tourism.
