Civil Society Activists Seek Answers Over Delays in Anti-Corruption Investigations
· Sri Lanka
A group of civil society activists and professional representatives visited the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) to seek clarification over what they described as delays in investigating allegations of corruption involving the current government.
The group submitted a letter to the commission raising concerns over the progress of several complaints lodged against the government, including allegations relating to coal procurement and the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.
The activists questioned why compensation related to the X-Press Pearl disaster had not been secured for Sri Lanka and why a Supreme Court ruling had not been implemented, according to the concerns outlined by the group.
They also sought clarification regarding the status of complaints concerning alleged irregularities and other incidents reported during the previous period.
Several professional and civil society leaders were present during the visit.
Following the submission of the letter, the representatives addressed the media and said they had come to inquire into delays in investigations into past alleged fraud and irregularities, as well as concerns that necessary inquiries had not been carried out.
The group called for greater attention to the complaints already submitted to the anti-corruption commission and sought clarification on the progress of the relevant investigations.
The concerns raised by the activists reflect their calls for accountability and transparency in the handling of corruption allegations. The commission’s response to the letter and the current status of the complaints were not included in the information provided.
