Civil Intelligence Front Criticises 22nd Amendment Protesters at Media Briefing

Colombo, September 24, 2026 — Speaking at a media briefing, Civil Intelligence Front Chairman Sanjaya Mahawatta criticised those participating in the protest against the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Mahawatta claimed that not even ten people participating in the protest knew about the contents of the 22nd Amendment.

He also criticised those who had gathered at Polduwa Junction, saying that there was no point in coming there merely to cheer Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

Referring to the judiciary, Mahawatta claimed that steps had been taken to make the judicial system more efficient and alleged that some individuals were now afraid of being imprisoned.

He further alleged that another group had attempted to gain political advantage from the Easter Sunday attacks and said that those responsible should also face punishment.

Mahawatta expressed support for the direction being taken by the government under President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

He also criticised the opposition protests, saying that protesters were demonstrating against legislation aimed at strengthening the law.

According to Mahawatta, the opposition had come forward mainly because of personal political issues.

He described the Easter Sunday attacks as an extremely sensitive issue and said his organisation was pleased with the relevant court ruling.

He further alleged that a group had attempted to gain political advantage from the Easter Sunday attacks and said that those responsible, including individuals he referred to as the “big fish,” should also receive punishment.

The proposed 22nd Amendment was scheduled for parliamentary debate on September 24 and 25, according to Parliament’s official schedule.
