China Unveils Lifelike Robotic Fish That Navigates Underwater Autonomously

China has unveiled a lifelike robotic fish capable of navigating underwater autonomously, offering a new approach to underwater exploration and monitoring.
Named the BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish, the robot was showcased at the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing. Inspired by the golden arowana, it uses a flexible, multi-jointed tail to move through water in a way that more closely resembles the motion of a real fish than conventional underwater drones.
Equipped with sensors, the robotic fish can detect obstacles and adjust its route while navigating, rather than relying solely on a fixed pre-programmed path.
The technology could have applications in underwater inspection, environmental monitoring and exploration, where a compact fish-like design could allow it to operate in areas that may be difficult for conventional underwater equipment to access.
However, its discreet appearance and autonomous navigation have also raised questions about potential surveillance and reconnaissance applications.
The development reflects the growing use of biomimicry in robotics, with engineers increasingly looking to nature for designs that can improve the way machines operate in challenging environments.
