China Launches AI-Powered Satellites to Boost Agriculture and Disaster Monitoring in Global South

China has successfully launched two AI-powered satellites from the waters off Shandong Province, marking a significant advancement in space-based technology and international cooperation. The satellites were placed into orbit on Wednesday and are set to deliver intelligent remote sensing services to Uzbekistan and Indonesia, highlighting China’s growing role in supporting technological development across the Global South.

Developed by Star.ai Spatio-temporal Intelligence Technology Co., Ltd., the satellites are equipped with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities that allow them to process data directly in space. This innovation significantly reduces response times, particularly in critical situations such as disaster monitoring and early warning systems.

One of the satellites will work closely with Uzbekistan to monitor the country’s cotton industry throughout its entire production cycle. From crop growth tracking to yield analysis, the satellite aims to enhance efficiency and decision-making in one of the nation’s key agricultural sectors.

The second satellite will support Indonesia by safeguarding its agricultural production. It will provide precise monitoring of crop conditions while also assessing potential disaster risks, helping authorities respond quickly to threats such as floods, droughts, and other environmental challenges.

According to Song Bingchen, co-founder of Star.ai, the initiative reflects deep cooperation between China and its partner countries across multiple sectors, including agriculture, meteorology, and mineral exploration. He emphasized that the AI-driven satellites can deliver actionable insights within minutes—far faster than traditional satellite systems, which may take hours to analyze and transmit data.
