Ceylon Golf League’s Second Edition Set for January 2027
· Sri Lanka
The second edition of the Ceylon Golf League (CGL), described as Sri Lanka’s first franchise-based golf tournament, will be held from January 8 to 10, 2027, at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
Nations Trust Bank has joined the tournament as its title partner for the upcoming edition. The announcement was made at a media briefing held at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, where sponsorship cheques were also presented.
More than 150 players have already registered for the tournament, which will feature eight city-based franchise teams competing for the championship.
Defending champions Nuwara Eliya Panthers will return to protect their title, while runners-up Trinco Sharks and the other franchises are expected to challenge for the trophy.
Player Auction Scheduled for October 23
The player auction ahead of the tournament is scheduled to take place on October 23 at The Atrium, Cinnamon Grand Colombo.
The eight franchises have already released 35 players as part of preparations for the auction and the restructuring of their squads.
Ceylon Golf League co-founder Shamal Perera said the success of the inaugural edition had demonstrated strong demand for franchise-based golf in Sri Lanka. Co-founders Mahela Jayawardene and Suhaib Sangani are also involved in the initiative.
Three Days of Competition
The tournament will be played over three days, with a different match format scheduled for each day.
The opening day, January 8, will feature foursomes matches, followed by fourball matches on January 9. The final day, January 10, is scheduled to feature individual matches in a 1-vs-3 format, according to the organisers’ announcement.
Players representing both the men’s and women’s divisions are expected to compete across seven handicap categories.
Mahela Jayawardene also addressed the media at the briefing, sharing his views on the tournament and its development.
The second edition is expected to build on the inaugural tournament as the organisers seek to expand the franchise-based golf format in Sri Lanka.
