Canberra airport deal with overseas counterparts clears runway for more direct flights

Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron signed the agreement as the airport works to strengthen its links with China.
The deal is being described as a practical step towards establishing a direct air connection between Canberra and Nanjing.
A direct service would give travellers from the ACT and surrounding regions a new route into China, while also improving access for Chinese visitors to Canberra.
The agreement could support tourism, business and broader economic links between Canberra and the Jiangsu region.
However, direct flights are not operating yet, with current Canberra–Nanjing services requiring stopovers.
The proposed connection would mark a significant expansion of Canberra Airport’s international network and strengthen Australia–China travel links.
