CAA intensifies action against sale of bread below the prescribed weight
· Sri Lanka
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has deployed special enforcement teams across all administrative districts to clamp down on the sale of bread that does not conform to officially stipulated weight standards. The nationwide programme follows a surge in consumer complaints regarding underweight loaves being marketed at standard retail prices.
Under current consumer regulations, commercial bakeries and distributors are legally obligated to produce standard loaves adhering to specific weight thresholds and to prominently display the weight and retail price at points of sale. Investigators have been instructed to conduct unannounced raids at production facilities, grocery stores, and retail stalls.
CAA officials confirmed that several vendors found violating consumer protection guidelines during the initial phase of the operation have been issued formal citations and will face judicial proceedings. The authority emphasized that continuous surveillance will be maintained across the market to protect consumers from unfair commercial practices.
