BYD Sales Rise 11% in October as Overseas Shipments More Than Double

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD recorded an 11% year-on-year increase in vehicle sales in October 2026, delivering 490,168 vehicles and extending its growth streak to six consecutive months.

The performance was supported by strong overseas demand, which helped offset weaker sales in China amid intensifying domestic competition and price pressures.

International shipments more than doubled to 170,194 vehicles during October, accounting for nearly 35% of the company’s total sales. However, overseas shipments declined 5.8% compared with September, indicating a slight month-on-month slowdown.

Fully Electric Models Gain Ground

BYD’s October figures also highlighted a shift in its sales mix towards fully electric vehicles. Battery-electric passenger vehicle sales surged 37.4% year-on-year to 305,743 units.

In contrast, plug-in hybrid sales declined 17.2% to 177,382 units, reflecting changing demand patterns across the company’s vehicle portfolio.

The growth in battery-electric models comes as manufacturers face increasing competition in China’s electric vehicle market, where aggressive pricing and evolving consumer preferences continue to influence sales.

Domestic Market Pressures Persist

Despite the October increase, BYD’s cumulative sales for the first ten months of 2026 fell 2.2% year-on-year to approximately 3.6 million vehicles.

The decline highlights the challenges facing the company in its home market, even as its international business expands and becomes an increasingly important contributor to overall performance.

BYD’s third-quarter financial results showed a 28% increase in net profit to CNY 10 billion, while revenue rose 13.6% to CNY 221.5 billion. However, net profit remained below analyst expectations.

Overseas Expansion Takes Centre Stage

The latest figures underline the growing importance of international markets for BYD as it navigates fierce competition at home and strengthens its global presence.

The company’s expanding overseas shipments reflect the broader international push by Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which are increasingly challenging established automotive brands across markets.

With overseas demand supporting its recent sales growth, BYD’s ability to sustain international expansion while managing domestic market pressures will remain an important factor in its performance.
