Aussie music legend Johnny Young dies aged 79

Australian television and music icon Johnny Young, best known as the creator, host and producer of Young Talent Time, has died following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Young’s family confirmed his death in a statement, describing him as the creative force behind the much-loved television program. He also wrote and produced several iconic Australian songs, including “The Real Thing” and “Smily.”

Young hosted Young Talent Time from 1971 to 1988, playing a major role in launching the careers of several Australian performers, including Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue.

Beyond television, Young enjoyed a successful career as a songwriter, singer and producer, becoming an influential figure in Australia’s entertainment industry.

He is survived by his wife Marisha, sister Cornelia, daughters Anna and Fleur, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His son Craig predeceased him.

The family has asked for privacy as they mourn his passing, with details of a memorial service expected to be announced later.
