Australia Strengthens Sri Lanka’s Disaster Response with Boats, Drones and $7M Support Package

Continuing his official visit to Sri Lanka, Tim Watts has handed over two inflatable rescue boats and advanced drones as part of Australia’s broader AUD 7 million Cyclone Ditwah response and recovery package.

The initiative, delivered in collaboration with UNOPS, aims to strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities. The newly provided equipment is expected to enhance rapid rescue operations, particularly during floods and other natural disasters.

Sri Lanka remains highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including floods, landslides, cyclones, droughts, and tsunamis. In response, Australia’s support extends beyond equipment donations, incorporating technical assistance to key national institutions such as the Disaster Management Centre and the National Building Research Institute.

This collaboration focuses on improving landslide risk assessment, promoting climate-resilient infrastructure planning, and supporting long-term disaster recovery strategies. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to building resilience and strengthening locally led disaster management systems across the Indian Ocean region.

The latest contribution highlights Australia’s ongoing role in supporting Sri Lanka’s efforts to better prepare for and respond to climate-related and natural disasters, ensuring safer communities and more effective emergency response mechanisms.
