Australia Eyes Tougher Social Media Algorithm and Porn Rules

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek says Australia should consider allowing social media users to opt in or opt out of recommendation algorithms.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns that young people can be exposed to violent and misogynistic content through social media algorithms.

The government is also considering following the United Kingdom by banning pornography that depicts strangulation or suffocation.

The issue has gained renewed attention following the death of a 16-year-old Sydney girl after a suspected sexual strangulation incident.

Minister Plibersek says Australia should take the risks seriously, while the government continues work on broader digital safety and consent education reforms.
