Animal liberation march in Mysuru on September 5

The Vegan India Movement will be taking an Animal Liberation March in Mysuru on Saturday to voice their opposition to ‘speciesism’ and animal exploitation.

According to Amjor Chandran from the Vegan India Movement, the Animal Liberation March, which is the first of its kind in Mysuru, will commence from the old Deputy Commissioner’s office at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday and proceed to Mysuru Town Hall.

A statement by the organisers said there is an urgent need to “expand moral consideration beyond conventional pets like dogs and cats, or wild animals, to include all sentient beings”. The march aims to raise awareness about the systemic exploitation of animals across various industries and advocate for an end to the consumption of animal products, including meat, eggs, dairy, and honey.

The statement also sought to throw light on the “often-hidden” realities of the dairy industry, including the routine artificial insemination of cows and buffaloes and the culling of male calves which are considered unprofitable.

The organisers also emphasised that abandoning animal products does not require a sacrifice in personal well-being. “Extensive peer-reviewed research confirms that humans can live healthy, thriving lives on a fully plant-based diet, removing the necessity for animal exploitation in our food systems,” the statement said.

Drawing direct parallels between speciesism and other forms of discrimination, the organisers noted that just as sexism, casteism, and racism are morally wrong, speciesism—the assumption of human superiority leading to the exploitation of other species—must also be dismantled.
