Andhra Pradesh Cabinet clears reclassification of 22.31 acres in Nellore for house sites

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet on Thursday (September 3, 2026), chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, approved a proposal to reclassify 22.31 acres of land in Nellore Urban mandal of SPSR Nellore district from ‘canal poramboke’ to ‘A.W. dry’ and issue house-site pattas to eligible poor beneficiaries in the area.

The decision was taken on the recommendations of a joint committee, with specific safeguards to protect the functioning and maintenance of the Sarvepalli canal. Of the total 62.70 acres under consideration, the reclassification will exclude the active canal area, the hydraulic operational zone and the mandatory 20-foot irrigation right-of-way buffer.

According to the Cabinet decision, the land classification change will be permitted only in areas that do not interfere with the canal’s water-carrying capacity or the Irrigation Department’s maintenance rights. The protected zones will continue to remain available for canal operations and maintenance.

The government has also authorised the issuance of house-site pattas to eligible economically weaker beneficiaries on the reclassified land. Officials have been directed to ensure that the prescribed safeguards are maintained while implementing the decision.

The approval is aimed at making suitable land available for housing for poor families while safeguarding the canal infrastructure, water flow and the Irrigation Department’s operational requirements.
