Amazon has launched its new Kindles in Australia and they’ve had a serious design upgrade

The new Kindles are here, and they look very different. Kindle has always had one job: get you away from your phone and into a book. Now Amazon is giving its e-readers a substantial design overhaul, with a new generation of Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft devices arriving in Australia. The new range is available from today, with the Paperwhite and Colorsoft available to pre-order through Amazon Australia and leading retailers.

The biggest change is immediately obvious: Amazon has redesigned the Kindle display architecture from the ground up, introducing a flush-front screen across the entire range. Instead of a raised border around the display, the screen sits seamlessly against the front of the device, creating a cleaner, more modern look. The devices are also thinner and lighter, while colour now runs edge-to-edge across the lineup.

And, thankfully, Amazon has resisted turning Kindle into another tablet. These are still designed around distraction-free reading, rather than notifications, apps and everything else competing for your attention. The new Kindle The entry-level Kindle has been redesigned to be the most pocket-sized Kindle Amazon has made. It has a 6-inch flush-front display, 16GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life and book opening that is up to 30 per cent faster than the previous generation. It also introduces edge-to-edge colour and comes in Ube, a rich purple shade, and Graphite.

The housing is made using recycled materials, including a 100 per cent recycled cobalt battery, and starts at $279. There is also a new aluminium version for anyone who wants something that feels a little more premium. It keeps the same compact 6-inch size but has an aluminium back made from 80 per cent recycled aluminium, with a matte finish. The aluminium model has 32GB of storage and comes in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green, starting at $299.

The Kindle Paperwhite gets slimmer The Paperwhite remains the option for readers who want a bigger screen and a few more features. The new model is thinner and lighter than the previous generation and has a larger display with improved contrast, designed to make text look crisp and clear whether you’re reading outside in bright sunlight or tucked into bed. It is also waterproof, has an adjustable warm light and can last for up to 12 weeks on a single charge.

The 16GB Kindle Paperwhite starts at $369 in Graphite. Then there is the Paperwhite Signature Edition, which adds 32GB of storage, an aluminium rear housing, an auto-adjusting front light, dock charging and double-tap page turning. It costs $399 and comes in Graphite and Seaglass Green. Kindle Colorsoft is getting a colourful makeover For readers who like their books with a little more visual detail, the Colorsoft is the most colourful update.

The new Kindle Colorsoft has a redesigned colour display intended to give pages a more paper-like appearance, without the harsh glare you would associate with a traditional tablet. That makes it suited to colourful book covers, travel guides, comics and graphic novels, while still being designed for regular black-and-white reading. The new display uses a redesigned light guide and technology designed to improve colour, brightness and clarity without washing out details. The standard 16GB Colorsoft starts at $449 in Graphite.

The Colorsoft Signature Edition has 32GB of storage, an aluminium housing, auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turning and dock charging. It costs $499 and comes in Graphite and the new Fig colour. Amazon has also thought about how we actually read Perhaps the most relatable part of the new launch is the accessories. Amazon has introduced Kindle Click, a $49.95 Bluetooth remote that lets you turn pages without touching the screen. It is designed for those very specific reading situations where reaching for the Kindle is annoying, whether you’re lying in bed, using a treadmill or trying to read on a plane.

There is also a Page-Turn Cover for $119.95, which has built-in physical page-turn buttons and connects using pogo pins. It is compatible with the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition. A new Charging Dock costs $89.95 and keeps compatible Kindle models upright while charging. Finally, new Kindle covers start at $54.95, with options including knit fabric, plant-based leather and premium pebbled leather. The covers are colour-matched to the new Kindle range, while slim magnetic covers are available for the aluminium models. The launch comes as Kindle continues to grow globally, with Amazon saying more than 720 billion pages were read on Kindle devices in 2025.
