237 new houses to be built for disaster-affected families in Badulla
· Sri Lanka
A major rehabilitation initiative to construct 237 permanent housing units for families displaced or placed at high risk following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah in the Badulla District is set to begin tomorrow. The project targets households in disaster-prone hillside zones that were identified as uninhabitable by disaster management and geological authorities.
The construction effort is part of the government's wider post-disaster recovery mechanism to permanently relocate families living in vulnerable locations. Authorities confirmed that site inspections and geotechnical feasibility assessments by the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) have been completed to ensure the selected relocation lands are resilient against future extreme weather events.
Local government officials and disaster management authorities have coordinated logistical arrangements to complete construction within an expedited timeline. In addition to housing units, the project incorporates basic infrastructure including clean drinking water systems, road connectivity, and community facilities for the relocated populations.
